Joy Beyond The Sorrow: Indelible Grace VI

by Indelible Grace Music

/
1.
1. From the depths of woe I raise to Thee, a voice of lamentation. Lord, turn a gracious ear to me, And hear my supplication. If Thou iniquities dost mark, Our secret sins and misdeeds dark, O who shall stand before Thee? 2. To wash away the crimson stain, Grace, grace alone availeth. Our works, alas! are all in vain; In much the best life faileth. No man can glory in Thy sight, All must alike confess Thy might, And live alone by mercy. 3. Therefore my trust is in the Lord, And not in mine own merit. On Him my soul shall rest, His word upholds my fainting spirit. His promised mercy is my fort, My comfort, and my sweet support. I wait for it with patience. 4. What though I wait the live-long night, And ’til the dawn appeareth. My heart still trusteth in His might, It doubteth not nor feareth. Do thus, O ye of Israel’s seed, Ye of the Spirit born indeed, And wait ’til God appeareth. 5. Though great our sins and sore our woes, His grace much more aboundeth. His helping love no limit knows, Our upmost need it soundeth. Our Shepherd good and true is He, Who will at last His Israel free, From all their sin and sorrow.
2.
1. Did Christ over sinners weep, And shall our cheeks be dry? Let floods of penitential grief, Burst forth from every eye. Chorus: Behold the Son of God in tears, The angels wondering see. Hast thou no wonder, O my soul? He shed those tears for thee! 2. He wept that we might weep, Might weep over sin and shame. He wept to show His love for us, And bid us love the same. (Chorus) 3. Then tender be our hearts, Our eyes in sorrow dim, Til every tear from every eye, Be wiped away by Him. (Chorus)
3.
1. Pensive, doubting, fearful heart, Hear what Christ the Savior says. Every word should joy impart, Change thy mourning into praise. Yes, he speaks, and speaks to thee, May he help thee to believe! Then thou presently wilt see, Thou hast little cause to grieve. 2. "Fear thou not, nor be ashamed, All thy sorrows soon shall end. I who heaven and earth have framed, Am thy husband and thy friend. I the High and Holy One, Israel's GOD by all adored, As thy Savior will be known, Thy Redeemer and thy Lord.” 3. “For a moment I withdrew, And thy heart was filled with pain, But my mercies I'll renew, Thou shalt soon rejoice again. Though I scorn to hide my face, Very soon my wrath shall cease. ‘Tis but for a moment's space, Ending in eternal peace.” 4. “When my peaceful bow appears, Painted on the watery cloud, 'Tis to dissipate thy fears, Lest the earth should be overflowed. 'Tis an emblem too of grace, Of my covenant love a sign. Though the mountains leave their place, Thou shalt be forever mine. 5. Though afflicted, tempest-tossed, Comfortless awhile thou art, Do not think thou canst be lost, Thou art graven on my heart. All thy walls I will repair, Thou shalt be rebuilt anew, And in thee it shall appear, What a God of love can do.
4.
1. Upon a life I have not lived, Upon a death I did not die, Another’s life; Another’s death, I stake my whole eternity. 2. Not on the tears which I have shed, Not on the sorrows I have known, Another’s tears; Another’s griefs, On these I rest, on these alone. Chorus: O Jesus, Son of God, I build on what Thy cross has done for me; There both my life and death I read, my guilt, and pardon there I see. 3. Lord, I believe; O deal with me, As one who has Thy Word believed! I take the gift, Lord, look on me, As one who has Thy gift received. (Chorus)
5.
1. For the vision of the Bridegroom, Waits the well-beloved Bride. Severed only for a season, From her Well-beloved's side. For the hour when morn ascendeth, And the shadows disappear, For the signs of heavenly glory, She is waiting, waiting here! Morn of morns, it comes at last, All the gloom of ages past. For the day of days the brightest, She is waiting, waiting here! 2. For the coming of the Bridegroom, Whom, though yet unseen, we love. For the King of saints, returning, In His glory from above. For the shout that shakes the prison, For the trumpet loud and clear. For the voice of the archangel, She is waiting, waiting here! Morn of morns, it comes at last, All the gloom of ages past. For the day of days the brightest, She is waiting, waiting here! 3. For the light beyond the darkness, When the reign of sin is done. When the storm has ceased its raging, And the haven has been won. For the joy beyond the sorrow, Joy of the eternal year. For the resurrection splendor, She is waiting, waiting here! Morn of morns, it comes at last, All the gloom of ages past. For the day of days the brightest, She is waiting, waiting here!
6.
1. Hast thou heard Him, seen Him, known Him? Is not thine a captured heart? Chief among ten thousand own Him, Joyful choose the better part. Chorus: Captivated by His beauty, Worthy tribute haste to bring. Let His peerless worth constrain thee, Crown Him now unrivaled King. 2. What can strip the seeming beauty, From the idols of the earth? Not a sense of right or duty, But the sight of peerless worth. 3. 'Tis that look that melted Peter, ’Tis that face that Stephen saw, 'Tis that heart that wept with Mary, Can alone from idols draw.
7.
1. For the bread which you have broken, For the wine which you have poured, For the words, which you have spoken, Now we give you thanks O Lord. 2. By this pledge that you do love us, By your gift of peace restored, By your call to heaven before us, Sanctify our lives O Lord. 3. With our sainted ones in glory, Seated at our Father’s board, May the Church that waits now for Thee, Keep love’s tie unbroken Lord. 4. In your service Lord defend us. In our hearts keep watch and ward. In the world where’r you send us, May your kingdom come O Lord.
8.
Chorus: Hail to the Lord’s anointed, great David’s greater Son! Hail in the time appointed, His reign on earth begun! 1. He comes to break oppression, to set the captive free, To take away transgression, and rule in equity. (Chorus) 2. He comes with comfort speedy to those who suffer wrong, To help the poor and needy, and bid the weak be strong. 3. To give them songs for sighing, their darkness turn to light, Whose souls, condemned and dying, are precious in His sight. (Chorus) 4. He shall come down like showers upon the fruitful earth, Love, joy, and hope, like flowers, spring in His path to birth. (Chorus) 5. The tide of time shall never His covenant remove. His Name shall stand forever, That Name to us is Love. (Chorus)
9.
1. Oft in sorrow, oft in woe, Onward, Christian, onward go. Fight the fight, maintain the strife, Strengthened with the Bread of life. 2. Let your drooping hearts be glad. March in heavenly armor clad. Fight, nor think the battle long. Victory soon shall be your song. 3. Let not sorrow dim your eye, Soon shall every tear be dry. Let not fears your course impede, Great your strength, if great your need. 4. Onward then in battle move, More than conquerors ye shall prove. Though opposed by many a foe, Christian soldiers onward go.
10.
1. I am Jesus’ little lamb, Ever glad at heart I am. For my Shepherd gently guides me, Knows my need, and well provides me, Loves me every day the same, Even calls me by my name. 2. Day by day, at home, away, Jesus is my staff and stay. When I hunger, Jesus feeds me, Into pleasant pastures leads me. When I thirst, He bids me go, Where the quiet waters flow. 3. Who so happy as I am, Even now the Shepherd’s lamb? And when my short life is ended, By His angel host attended, He shall fold me to His breast, There within his arms to rest.
11.
1. God moves in a mysterious way, His wonders to perform. He plants his footsteps on the sea, And rides upon the storm. 2. Ye fearful saints fresh courage take, The clouds you so much dread, Are big with mercy, and shall break, With blessings on your head. 3. Judge not the Lord by feeble sense, But trust him for his grace. Behind a frowning providence, He hides a smiling face. 4. His purposes will ripen fast, Unfolding every hour. The bud may have a bitter taste, But sweet will be the flower. 5. Blind unbelief is sure to err, And scan His work in vain.
God is His own interpreter, And He will make it plain.
12.
1. Glory be to God the Father, Glory be to God the Son, Glory be to God the Spirit, Great Jehovah three in One. Singing glory, glory. Glory while eternal ages run. 2. Glory be to Him who loved us, Washed us from each spot and stain. Glory be to Him who bought us, Made us kings with Him to reign. Singing glory, glory. Glory to the Lamb who once was slain. 3. Glory to the King of Angels, Glory to the Church’s King. Glory to the King of nations, Heaven and earth your praises bring. Singing glory, glory. Glory to the King of Nations bring. 4. Glory blessing praise eternal, Thus the choir of angels sings. Honor riches power dominion, Thus its praise creation brings. Singing glory, glory. Glory, glory to the King of Kings
13.
1. My God and Father! while I stray, Far from my home in life’s rough way, Oh! teach me from my heart to say, “Thy will be done!” “Thy will be done!” 2. If Thou shouldst call me to resign, What most I prize, it ne’er was mine. I only yield Thee what was Thine; “Thy will be done!” “Thy will be done!” 3. If but my fainting heart be blest, With Thy sweet Spirit for its guest, My God! To Thee I leave the rest, “Thy will be done!” “Thy will be done!” 4. Renew my will from day to day, Blend it with Thine, and take away, All now that makes it hard to say, “Thy will be done!” “Thy will be done!” 5. Then when on earth I breathe no more, The prayer oft mixed with tears before, I’ll sing upon a happier shore, “Thy will be done!” “Thy will be done!”
14.
1. Behold me here, in grief draw near, Pleading at Thy throne oh King. To Thee each tear, each trembling fear, Jesus Son of Man I bring. Let me find Thee, Let me find Thee. Let me find Thee, Lord of mercy King of grace. 2. Look down in love, and from above, With Thy Spirit satisfy. Thou hast sought me, Thou hast bought me, And thy purchase Lord am I. Let me find Thee, Let me find Thee. Let me find Thee, Here on earth and then on high. 3. Hear the broken, scarcely spoken, Longings of my heart to thee All the crying, all the sighing, Of Thy child accepted be. Let me find Thee, Let me find Thee. Let me find Thee, Wounded healer, suffering Lord.

about

“When the storm has ceased its raging, And the haven has been won.
For the joy beyond the sorrow, Joy of the eternal year.
For the resurrection splendor, She is waiting, waiting here!”

I suppose joy and sorrow are the two great inspirations for song in our world. It has long been this way. In the Christian vision of the world these two themes are inextricably linked. We worship the Lamb who was slain, and who will forever carry the scars of His love. We believe it is important for the Church to sing songs that give voice to both of these themes; thus we present our eighth project. Suffering is real and grievous, and it is an obscenity of sorts to deny it in our preaching or our songs. But Christians believe that while suffering is real, it is not ultimate. We believe there is a “joy beyond the sorrow” and we sing to mold our hearts around this reality. We believe our songs should honestly cry out with the voice of lamentation even while knowing that “our shepherd good and true is He, Who will at last His Israel free, from all their sin and sorrow.” We long for the church to grow in both her freedom to cry and her freedom to hope and pray this collection of songs may serve that end.
